Background
A memorable food experience is not much different from soaking in an architectural marvel; both are multisensory experiences that evoke emotions in a consumer. Everybody is an amateur professional photographer these days; every memory is captured and shared on social media. With this, the demand for photogenic spaces and memorable food experiences has skyrocketed. The four-day intensive food architecture workshop requires budding architects to think outside the box.
Habitable Food and Edible Architecture
By re-looking at the two seemingly unrelated artistic disciplines of gastronomy and architecture; participants work together to create unforgettable food experiences during the food architecture workshop. The deliverables are in the form of an interactive art installation; not to exceed 10’ x 10’ x 10’. The installations tie into the ongoing architectural design project to design curriculum.
Students draw on memories, personal experiences and conduct secondary research. They write ‘eating excerpts’ addressing local eating culture. Then they move on to present proposals and critique each others’ work. Students work on the most promising concepts to create physical installations. By considering structural stability, budget, ergonomics and aesthetics; students deliver spectacular results. Three unique experiences were built, including The Baati Wall, The Cotton Cloud and The Thali Sequence. Students present their concepts as visitors enjoy the interactive, multisensory experiences.
We conduct hands-on workshops for students of design and hospitality schools.
